Saiyedna Qaazi No’maan bin Mohammad (aq), the Chief Justice of Maulaana Imaam Ma'ad al-Mo'iz (as), in his book Sharh ul-Akhbaar has selected 53 verses of the Qur’an which, in its esoteric meaning (taweel-baatin), encompasses the Fazeelat (significance) of Maulaana Ali (as) and Ahl ul-Bayt (as). The people of commonalty, due to lack of righteous guidance, have never been able to fathom the bottomless depth of these verses. The name of the Mofassir (one who does the tafseer-interpretation) has been mentioned along with the verse.

Verse 1: “Yaa aiyohal lazeena aamanu-d-kholu fis-silme kaaffatan wala tattabe’oo khotowaatish shaitaan innahu lakum ‘adoowum mubeen” (208/2)

Mofassir: Maulaana Ali (as)
‘O people who have Imaan, enter with perfection, in Islaam and don’t follow the footsteps of Shaitaan, verily he is your open enemy.’ The word ‘Silm’ which means Islaam, here, in the real sense is the Walaayat and Mohabbat of Maulaana Ali (as) and his Aal-e-taahir, with which the Deen of Allaah is complete and acceptable. ‘Shaitaan’ are the people who claimed themselves to be ‘religious leaders’ of the ‘people’ and were not ordained by Allaah to do so. Verily they are open enemy for you and will lead you to Hell.

Verse 2: “Wa-innal lazeena laa yu’menoona bil-aakherate ‘anis siraate la-naakeboon” (74/23)

Mofassir: Maulaana Ali (as)
‘And verily, those who don’t believe in the Aakherat are deviating from the Path.’ By now it is very clear even from the words of the verse that who is a ‘Siraat’ for us – it is nothing but the Walaayat of Ameer ul-Mumineen (as) and A’immat-e-Taahereen (as). If the people are aware about the truth of Aakherat, in the sense that, who deserves Jannat and Jahannam after death, they would have never deviated from the blessing of the Walaayat. Undoubtedly, they have forgotten the last words of Rasoolullaah (saws) and have deviated from the ‘Path’.

Verse 3: “Wa minhum may-yaqoolo rabbana aatena fid-duniyaa hasanatan wa fil aakherate hasanatan waqena ‘azaaban naar” (201/2)

Mofassir: Ibn-e-‘Abbas
‘And from them some will say; O our Lord (Rabb) give us Hasanat (favour) in this world and Hasanat in the Aakherat (hereafter) and save us from the ‘Azaab (curse) of the Fire (Hell).’ 'Hasanat' is the Walaayat of Ahl ul-Bayt (as) which is a favour, blessing and bounty of Allaah on us in this world and in the Aakherat and it is the only thing which will save us from the ‘Azaab (curse) of the Hell. We are blessed that Allaah has given this Hasanat to us in this world and the same will come to rescue us from the fire of Hell.

Verse 4: “Be’samashtaroo behi anfosahum an yakforoo bemaa anzalallaaho baghyan an yonazzelallaaho min fazlehi ‘alaa man yashaa’o min ‘ebaadehi, fa-baa’oo be-ghazabin ‘alaa ghazabin wa-lil kaafereena ‘azaabum moheen”
(90/2)

Mofassir: Maulaana Ali Zayn ul-‘Aabedeen (as)
'The thing with which they have sold their self is evil, in the way that they have disbelieved what Allaah has revealed, with a grievance that Allaah reveals His grace Himself over He wishes so, on His servants (worshippers) He pleases. They have invited anger upon anger and for them (disbelievers) is a shameful doom.’ ‘Kaaferoon’ are the people who rejected the ‘Fazl’ of Allaah in the form of the Walaayat of Maulaana Ali (as) – which was revealed on Rasoolullaah (saws). This fazl encompasses each and every amal of the Shari’at. Verily, they have rejected, what was revealed unto them by Allaah, and they have invited His anger and the reward of their misdeed is a shameful doom.

Verse 5: “Yaa aiyohal lazeena aamanu-s-tajeebu lillaahe wa lir-rasoole ezaa da’aakum lemaa yoh’yeekum(24/8)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘O people who have Imaan, accept or obey Allaah and Rasoolullaah (saws) when he calls you to that which will give you life.’ Which is the thing that gives life? Which is this life? It is the 'Walaayat' which gives life to us in the real sense – in this world and in the Aakherat. Rasoolullaah (saws) called for the Walaayat at the ground of Ghadeer-e-Khumm to the people of the Ummat. By revealing the Rukn (pillar) of Walaayat to the people he infused life into Islaam which was like a dead body without it. He completed all the favours on us and the Deen of Allaah attained maturity by the Rukn of Walaayat. Those who accepted it, enjoyed the favours of Allaah in the world and the Aakherat and those who turned their back to it, remained dead, and will remain so for ever.

Verse 6: “Falamma ra’awho zulfatan see’at wujoohul lazeena kafaru wa qeela haazal laze kuntum behi tadda’oon(27/67)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘But when they will see it approaching (the torment of the Day of Qayaamat), the faces of the unbelievers will be saddened (grieved) and it will be said (to them), ‘This is the promise which you were calling for.’ The promise is the result of the rejection and disobedience of Walaayat of Ahl ul-Bayt (as) which will come unto them as the torment.  The unbelievers will remain in the state of ignorance and always disrespect the truth in duniyaa but as soon as the veil of this material life will get lifted there would remain no time for them to repent and ask Allaah to let them get the new lease of life to become believer.  They have lost everything and now without any delay they are laid before the shameful outcome of their shaitaani acts.

Verse 7:
Wasbir ‘ala maa yaqooloona wahjurhum hajran jameela” (10/73)

Mofassir: Imaam Ja’far us-Saadiq (as)
‘And be patient (O Rasoolullaah (saws)) with what they say, and leave them (part away from them) in a good way.’ Allaah Ta’aala says to Rasoolullaah (saws) to be patient with the unbelievers when they question about the Darajah and Martabah of Maulaana Ali (as) after him. It is Allaah who will reveal unto them whatever they deserve of their misdeeds and wrong doings.

Verse 8: Wazarni wal mokazzebeena oolin ne’mate wa mahhilhum qaleela” (11/73)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘And leave Me to the ones who are deniers (those who deny my verses) and those who are in possession of ease and comfort (in this life), and give them respite for a little while.’ O Rasoolullaah (saws), leave the fate and destiny of the unbelievers, who have denied the Walaayat of Maulaana Ali (as), upon me. Leave them over their possessions of ease and comfort of this worldly life and give them some respite. Surely, they will witness the truth on the Day of Qayaamat when the Fire will be neared to them for their disobedience.

Verse 9: “Illa ashaabal yameen. Fee jannaatin yatasaa’aloon. ‘Anil mujremeen(39,40,41/74)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘Except those on the right. In the Paradise they will ask one another. About the Mujremoon (unbelievers).’ Mujremoon are the ones who usurped the Martabah of Maulaana Ali (as) and the people who turned against him after Rasoolullaah (saws).

Verse 10:
“Waqefoohum innahum mas’ooloon(24/37)

Mofassir: Ibn-e-‘Abbas
‘(Allaah will say to the Angels) And stop them (before they are neared to the Fire), for they must be questioned.’ The thing for which they will be questioned is the Walaayat of Ameer ul- Mumineen (as), for if at all they have it within them, they will be saved from the torment.  The best and ultimate ne’mat for a mumin in this temporal world and unstable abode is the faith and devotion to the members of the holy house of Rasoolullaah (saws) which makes his dwelling in the aakherat supreme and ever-lasting.  All would be asked for this ne’mat and there will be two different groups, one would be heading towards paradise holding this ne’mat and the other one would be severely punished for not beholding this ne’mat of walaayat and obedience.

Verse 11: “Afatatma’oona an yoomenu lakum waqad kaana fareequm minhum yasma’oona kalaamallaahe summa yoharrefoonahu min ba’de maa ‘aqalooho wahum ya’lamoon” (75/2)

Mofassir: Imaam Ja’far us-Saadiq (as)
‘Do you (believers) have any hope that they will believe in you (have faith in you)? Seeing that the party of them heard the Word of Allaah, and changed it knowingly after they understood it.’ Indeed, we believers have no hope in them, the unbelievers of the Wasaayat and Walaayat of Maulaana Ali (as), that they will have faith in us. Haven’t we seen that they had heard the Word of Allaah and Rasoolullaah (saws) regarding the Walaayat? But then, knowingly they changed it (doctored the truth) after they understood it.  The unbelievers left no stone unturned in maligning and oppressing the true heir of the seat of Rasoolullaah (saws) and his supporters.  All the sayings and guidance of Rasoolullaah (saws) pointing towards the fazeelat and merits of his successor Maulaana Ali (as) was systematically and periodically fabricated and altered in the shaan of his usurpers which was never uttered by Rasoolullaah (saws).

Verse 12: “Afakullama jaa’akum rasoolun bema laa tahwaa anfosokumus-takbartum fa-fareeqan kazzabtum wa fareeqan taqtoloon” (87/2)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘Then, when a Rasool came among you with a thing which you did not wish for, you became arrogant and some of you disbelieved and some of you killed?’ People who disbelieved Rasoolullaah (saws) and forgot his words regarding the Walaayat and Mohabbat of Maulaana Ali (as) and Ahl ul-Bayt (as), which were mandated upon them from Allaah and which they did not wish for. Verily they became arrogant and disbelieved the command of Allaah and selected their leaders from them. By doing this, they committed a thing which was never sent to them by Allaah.

Verse 13:
“Waman azlamo mimmam mana’a masaajedallaahe an yuzkara feehas-mohu wasa’aa fee kharaabeha, olaa’eka maa kaana lahum an yadkholooha illa khaa’efeena lahum fid-duniyaa khizyun walahum fil-aakherate ‘azaabun ‘azeem” (114/2)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘And who is more unjust (wrong doer) than the one who forbid the Allaah’s name be glorified and mentioned in Allaah’s mosques which will ruin them? It was never meant that they should enter (the mosques) except in fear. For them is the disgrace in this world and they will have greater torment in the Hereafter.’ Which mosque is being talked about in this verse? Who are the people? If we confine the meaning of this verse to the time of Rasoolullaah (saws) when the Kaaferoon and Mushrekeen used to forbid the believers from entering the Haram of Ka’batullaah for Namaaz or performing Hajj; then we are doing injustice to Allaah and it means that indeed, we haven’t understood the essence of this verse. Undoubtedly, every word of Qur’an is true for every period and era and will remain so till the Day of Qayaamat. The words of Allaah can never ever be confined to a particular time or period.

We are blessed that Allaah has included us among His true believers and given the end of Hablullaah il-Mateen in our hands. He has guided us on Siraat-e-Mustaqeem by His divine knowledge, whose real inheritors and guardian are A’immat-e-Taahereen (as), who is the progeny of Maulaatena Faatema (as). They are the fountainhead of Elaahi Ilm for us in every period and era. They have given us the real meaning and essence of the Qur’an.

Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as) unfolds the complexity and crux of the above verse and says that, Mosque(s) is the Walaayat of Maulaana Ali (as) and the names of Allaah Ta’aala which are mentioned and glorified in the mosque(s) are the succession of A’imaat-e-Taahereen (as) who are from the progeny of Maulaana Ali (as). The people who forbade from entering the mosque(s) are the enemies of Maulaana Ali (as) who usurped his martabah of Wasi-e-Rasool (saws). They are unjust (Zaalemoon, pl. of Zaalim) and they have ruined their lives and deserve the torment of Allaah on the Day of Qayaamat.

Verse 14: “Wawassa behaa Ibraaheemo baneehe wa ya’qoobo yaa baniyaa innallaaha-s-tafaa lakomud-deena falaa tamootunna illa wa antum muslemoon” (132/2)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘And Maulaana Ibraaheem (as) did Wasiyat (Nass, appointed) on his sons and also Maulaana Ya’qoob (as) that O my sons, Allaah have selected this religion (Deen) for you, then you will not die but in the state of being a Muslim.’ Just as Maulaana Ibraaheem (as) did the Nass and appointed his sons as his successors and the protector of his legacy and Maulaana Ya’qoob (as) also did the same thing, how could it be possible that Rasoolullaah (saws), who is Aakhir un- Nabiyeen and Saiyed ul-Mursaleen (last and the supreme of all prophets) pass away from this world without appointing his successor (Wasi)? Skies and the land and every creation of Allaah will bear witness that Rasoolullaah (saws) did appoint Maulaana Ali (as) as his Wasi after him at Ghadeer-e-Khumm. Curse and torment of Allaah will be upon them on the day of witness who have denied about this command of Allaah. Hence Allaah says, don’t die in the state of being a Muslim, but enter into the divine shadow of the Imaan (faith), accept the Walaayat and Mohabbat of Ahl ul-Bayt (as) and die as a Mumin.

Verse 15:
“Qul Innamaa a’ezokum bewaahedatin an taqoomu lillaahe masnaa waforaada summa tatafakkaroo maa besaahebekum min jinnatin in howa illa nazeerul lakum bayna yaday ‘azaabin shadeed” (46/34)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘Say to them (O Rasoolullaah (saws)): I urge you on one thing only; that you stand up for Allaah’s sake in pairs or singly, and reflect (within yourselves the Walaayat of Maulaana Ali (as)), there is no madness in your companion (Rasoolullaah (saws)), he is only a warner to you in face of severe torment (of Allaah).’ It is the acceptance and obeisance of Maulaana Ali (as) that will save and protect you from the torment of the Fire of Jahannam. In no way Rasoolullaah (saws) has been possessed by anyone nor is he saying the things to you himself. It is the word of Allaah. Rasoolullaah (saws) is a warner to you about the torment of Jahannam.

Verse 16: “Walaqad saddaqa ‘alayhim Ibleeso zannahu fattaba’ooho illa fareeqam minal mumineen” (20/34)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘And Iblees (Shaitaan) did prove his thought true about them, and they followed him, all except a group of mumineen.’ This verse needs no Tafseer as the intellectual mumin whose heart has been dignified with the glory of the Noor of Walaayat will easily understand it. The people did accept the words of Rasoolullaah (saws) in front of him, keeping his honour, at Ghadeer-e-Khumm. But no sooner did the eyes of Rasoolullaah (saws) closed permanently; they were possessed by the Iblees who misguided them. They were seen nowhere near the Hujrah (room) of Rasoolullaah (saws) after his death, but instead, were busy in commotion to decide about whom to elect as their ‘leader’. They followed Iblees – Shaitaan and forgot that Rasoolullaah (saws) himself appointed Maulaana Ali (as) as his Wasi and Successor. All of them succumbed to Iblees and his wickedness except the ones who were rightly guided by Allaah and followed the path of truth. Indeed they are the Mumineen, on whom, all the evil conspiracies of Iblees – Shaitaan turned null and void.

Verse 17: “Wa-anfeqoo fee sabeelillaahe walaa tulqoo elat-tahlokate, wa ahsenoo, innallaaha yohibbul mohseneen” (195/2)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as)
‘And spend in the way of Allaah and don’t get destroyed on your own, and do good (Ehsaan), indeed Allaah loves the Mohseneen (one who does good, Ehsaan)’. It has been related from A’immat-e-Taahereen (as) that the word ‘Sabeel’ and ‘Ehsaan’, wherever it occurs in the Qur’an, is the Walaayat of Maulaana Ali (as). Allaah Ta’aala has done Ehsaan on us by giving us the Ne’mat (favour) of Walaayat, which is the cause of our Najaat and Shafaa’at. Hence Allaah says, ‘wa ahsenoo’, which means ‘do ehsaan’ i.e. keep Walaayat and spend yourselves in the way of Allaah (Sabeelillaah – Walaayat). And don’t get destroyed on your own by not keeping the Walaayat. Indeed Allaah loves the one who are Mohseneen.

Verse 18: “Yaa aiyohan naaso qad jaa’akum-ur-rasoolo bil-haqqe min rabbekum fa-aamenu khayral lakum wa’in takforoo fa’inna lillaahe maa fis-samaawaate wal arze wa kaanallaaho ‘aleeman hakeema” (170/4)

Mofassir: Imaam Mohammad ul-Baaqir (as) Imaam Ja’far us-Saadiq (as)
‘O people, your Rabb (Allaah) has sent the messenger (Rasoolullaah (saws)) to you on truth so it is better for you to believe (and have faith) in him, but if you disbelieve then Allaah knows everything that is in the skies and the earth, and Allaah is all-knowing and all-wise.’ The truth with which Rasoolullaah (saws) has come to us is the Walaayat of Maulaana Ali (as) and it is better for us that we believe and have faith in it. And if we don’t believe in it then it is Allaah Who will decide the reward of our misdeeds. Walaayat is ‘Khayr’ (best of deeds) in this world and will give us the best of rewards after death.
